How much raw sewage is being released into the sea?

Raw sewage being released into the sea is a most unpleasant phenomenon. It’s smelly, dirty, looks unattractive and of course, it is really dangerous for marine life, birds, people swimming in the sea and even sea-going vessels.

Why is raw sewage being released into the sea?

Water companies are permitted to release a limited amount of raw sewage into the sea. However, this is only in very specific circumstances, namely, when it has rained so heavily that there is a real risk of flooding to homes.

However, it would seem that some water companies have been pushing the boundaries over recent years and releasing raw sewage into the sea too hastily. Of course, sewage water is supposed to be directed towards a sewage treatment plant so that the water can be cleaned and purified appropriately.

How much is there?

Unfortunately, the amount of sewage that has gone into the sea in recent years has risen considerably, with double the amount released in 2023. Water companies have received large fines from the regulating body, Ofwat, but is this enough to deter them from it happening again?

Poor management at some water companies has resulted in up to 6,000 potential dry spills in 2022. Hopefully, now that the companies doing this have been rumbled, there will be a considerable improvement in their collective efforts to prevent it from happening.

On the plus side, increased monitoring of storm overflow is now at a record 100% nationally, according to GOV.UK .

Keeping water fresh

A CCTV drain survey Birmingham and other locations, offered by specialist surveyors such as wilkinson-env.co.uk/drainage-services-cctv-surveys-midlands/cctv-drain-surveys/cctv-drain-surveys-birmingham, is a good way for companies to monitor what is going on inside drains where we can’t see easily. This technology enables experts to check for blockages, cracks and leaks, ensuring prompt repair and preventing problems from getting out of hand.

No one wants to imagine that contaminated water comes anywhere near our homes as a result of this. If you have any concerns about the quality of water in your home, contact a plumber right away.
